Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Wisdom teeth are often referred to as molars and are the final teeth in our mouths to break through. This normally occurs roughly between 17 to 25 years old. Arguments have raged for years regarding the requirement for removal of wisdom teeth. It is perfectly alright to leave these teeth alone if they do not cause any discomfort or pain, but if they are causing problems they removal will be required. Sometimes wisdom teeth become impacted, this means that the tooth did not emerge fully in to its expected position. Often Impacted wisdom teeth must to be removed. If the tooth cannot be pulled out then a qualified surgeon will need to cut it out, this will require a visit to your chosen oral surgeon for a consultation. X-rays will be taken and looked at by the surgeon during the consultation to ascertain the extent of the problem with the wisdom tooth. The surgeon will then explain the results of the x-rays and their examination before discussing your options. If the tooth is to be either pulled out or cut out you should get the choice of whether local anaesthesia or IV sedation will be used. Preferably IV sedation will be used during the extraction as you will not really be aware of what is happening. If your decision is to numb the area using local anaesthesia, you will aware of the operation including the sounds of the procedure which can be quite unpleasant. The removal of wisdom teeth varies between easy and hard depending on the formation, shape and size of the tooth. For example, the removal can be time consuming and painful if the tips of the roots have wrapped around the bone. Luckily after an extraction there is normally very little swelling. After your wisdom teeth have been removed the dentist will provide information to you to ensure you do not experience any problems during the healing process of your mouth and gums. The dentist will provide you with a prescription for some pain medication which you should take when you get home. If IV sedation is used someone will have to accompany you to drive you home. A good idea is to have someone stay with you for 24 hours to be sure you are ok. It will also be impossible to eat some for about 48 hours. Although getting wisdom teeth removed sounds unpleasant and can be quite painful at times, there will be a noticeable change for the better in your mouth after healing and best of all no more pain!
